Designer Days with Seth Apter, Countdown to Creativation

We are counting down the days to Creativation 2017 (Craft & Hobby Assoc. Trade Show) here in Phoenix Arizona! Not everyone can make the event so why not bring some of it to you. This week, we are featuring Designer Days to introduce our licensed designers for 2017 – some whom you know and some who are new, so stay tuned! Today, we continue with one of our licensed designer who joined Spellbinders® last year, Seth Apter!

Describe {Seth Apter} in three words.

Layered, dimensional and textured…just like my art.

What were some influences that helped shape the collection?

My new collection was influenced by sights that I have seen on my recent travels and by my home in New York City. Both urban and more organic visual elements that caught my eye were abstracted, drawn by hand, and turned into dies. Because the resulting die cuts are abstract in nature, they can lend themselves to many, varied uses.

Where is your favorite place to create or get inspired?

I am constantly inspired by and in awe of New York City. Right out my door is an endless treasure trove of inspiration that never fails to ignite my creativity. The energy, the architecture, the shop windows, the galleries and museums, the people – and more – always give me ideas.

What are your favorite, ‘must have’ pieces in your upcoming collection?

My first favorite piece in my collection is my die set Ray of Light. The shape of the main die is both organic and soft as well as grungy and edgy. Whether seen as a series of abstract shapes, a bright sun with rays, or anything else, I believe the die cut can be used as a unique and powerful focal image. My second favorite is my Broken Maze die. Could be a maze, a labyrinth, a path, etc. and can be seen as playful, strong, broken, etc. Again, a die cut that lends itself to many projects and interpretations.
