Yana’s Blooming Birthday Card Set with Lea Lawson

Hi crafty friends! Lea Lawson here today to share a card set featuring the new products from Yana’s Blooming Birthday collection. This is such a gorgeous collection of Glimmer Hot Foil plates and coordinating dies. Let’s take a look at how I created these cards!

I started by working on foiling the backgrounds to 4.25” x 5.5” panels of heavyweight watercolor paper with my Glimmer Hot Foil System. I had five panels in total, and I did the following foiling to each one, all in Aura colored foil.

  1. Foiled the Glimmering Peony 4 times to create a full background.
  2. Foiled the Blooming Floral Background twice to create foiled borders around all edges.
  3. Foiled the Skinny Stripe Background once.
  4. Foiled the Glimmering Peony once to be fussy cut.
  5. Foiled the Diamond Floral Frame once to be die-cut.

With the first round of foiling done, I proceeded to watercolor. I started with the full background of Glimmering Peonies, and colored two of the flowers in Magnolia pink, the other two in Peach Tree and the leaves in Pistachio. I used shimmery watercolor markers, so these cards are super glittery & gorgeous in person – it’s just a little hard to photograph. Hopefully you can see it a little here & there!

Next I used the same colors to watercolor the single Glimmering Peony, but this time I did multi-colored florals in the one bunch. I fussy cut this image out once I finished coloring it. (The key to being able to fussy cut immediately is not using too much water when coloring the images. A damp water brush works perfectly for this.)

I decided to do some watercolor smooshing for the Blooming Floral Backround panel. I generously brushed the watercolor markers on to my glass mat, then lightly spritzed them with some water. Then I just started dabbing the paper panel into the watercolor around the edges, lightly mopping up areas where they ran together too much. You will want to take another pass at this after your first round has dried a bit, just to give the watercolor more depth and color variation.

Next I diecut all the background panels with the largest Essentials Rectangles, and the Diamond Floral Frame with it’s coordinating die. I mounted each one to an A2 card base with foam adhesive. I added the diamond and fussy cut peony to the card with the Skinny Stripe Background.

Then I proceeded to foil the sentiments in magenta colored foil to the same watercolor paper I used for the backgrounds. I foiled the friendship and thank you sentiments from Yana’s Special Sentiments, and mounted them to the two cards with the Glimmering Peony foiling. I foiled the hope sentiment from Blooming Floral Background, and mounted it to the coordinating card. To finish, I accented each card with crystals &/or jewels.
