Vintage Vibes With A Touch Of Clean & Simple
Hello there Spellbinders friends! It’s Lisa Tilson here with you today on the Spellbinders blog. I’m excited to be here to show you some ideas using the oh-so-pretty Yana’s Poppies Collection. This collection is small but nonetheless gorgeous for it. It contains a background press plate, a layering stencil set, and a set of etched dies. The stencil layering set works in conjunction with the press plate and is a quick and simple way of adding beautiful color to your projects.
Thanks
For my first card, I am using the Poppy Background Press Plate and the Layered Poppy Background Stencils. Instead of pressing my plate, I thought I would foil it for this card. I think the result looks like a beautiful vintage fabric! Something I would see in Liberty’s in Regent Street, London. Their prints are to die for. If you ever get the opportunity to visit, you must, it is full of stunning inspiration! But let’s get into the card.
So, I started off with my foiling. I used Satin Champagne Glimmer Hot Foil because I love that muted but beautiful shimmer. As there is quite a lot of solid area on this press plate, I foiled it onto Hammermill smooth white cardstock using the Glimmer Hot Foil System. I kept the leftover foil piece for later. I then placed the foiled panel onto my Waffle Flower Grip Mat and worked my way through the Layered Poppy Background Stencils. There are six of them and they are super easy to line up.
I used Altenew Red Sunset, Red Cosmos, Green Fields, and Summer Afternoon Fresh Dye Inks and I applied my color using a mix of large and small blending brushes.
Layer 1 – Blush, Rouge Crimson
Layer 2 – Rouge, Crimson, Velvet
Layer 3 – Frosty Pink, Coral Berry, Ruby Red
Layer 4 – Forest Glades, Evergreen
Layer 5 – Evergreen
Layer 6 – Warm Sunshine, Caramel Toffee
I then cut the panel down using the largest die from Nestabilities Hemstitch Rectangles Etched Dies and I adhered it onto a top folding white A2 notecard (11” x 4.25”, scored at 5.5”).
In the first two photos, it looks like my foil had creased, but in the photo above you can see it was smoother than it originally looked. If I was to remake this card, I would try foiling the plate with some Glimmer Specialty Cardstock instead. That would definitely result in an even smoother finish. My sentiment is from Yana’s Layered Script Sentiments Etched Dies. I cut the base layer from 80lb white card and the word die twice from Dahlia Color Essentials Cardstock. I adhered the two pink words together using Bearly Art Glue and then glued that onto the base and finally onto the foiled panel.
Smile
For my next card, I used Yana’s Poppies Etched Dies. This set contains an outline die and a shadow die.
I began by creating the beautiful poppy that will take center stage on the card. First of all, I die cut the shadow die from vellum and set that to one side. I then die cut the outline die from a panel of white card which I had added a double-sided adhesive sheet to.
I used inks to color all the little pieces that would eventually be inlaid back into the outline die cut. I used Altenew’s Red Cosmos and Summer Afternoon Fresh Dye Inks for my color. I simply removed each of the poppy pieces and using small blending brushes, I applied three shades of pink onto each, and two shades of yellow onto the poppy centerpieces.
After I had finished the ink blending, I adhered the white outline die cut on to the vellum. I then inlaid each of the poppy petals and centers into the outline. As I had die-cut these pieces from white card with a double-sided adhesive sheet added to it, I didn’t need to add any wet adhesive at all; so there was no chance of my vellum warping. I set the poppy to one side to work on the background.
For the background, I used Fog Color Essentials Cardstock. I cut a shaped panel using Fresh Picked Labels and Tag Etched Dies and I temporarily adhered this to an A2 (4.25” x 5.5”) panel of Fog card. I popped the card into my Splat Box and added some white splatter using Splatter White Opaque Watercolor and a No. 2 Round Brush. I left the panels to dry and then I trimmed the A2 panel down a tiny bit and adhered it to a top folding A2 notecard using Bearly Art Glue. The shaped panel was then added with some foam tape. The poppy was popped up with foam tape, leaving space for me to add my sentiment below.
I next die cut the “Smile” from Fresh Picked Sentiments Etched Dies three times and adhered them together to form a small stack. This was then added under the poppy. The sub-sentiment is from A Little Hello Sentiments Clear Stamp and Die Set and it was stamped using Versafine Clair Nocturne Ink onto white card. I cut it out with the matching die and added it across the poppy using foam tape. I finished by adhering some Fashion Oyster Color Essentials Pearl Dots.
From Me To You
For my final card, I used the leftover piece of foil from my first card and did some reverse foiling.
To reverse foil, you simply place your negative piece of foil onto your card panel and add a solid plate on top. So, I took the foil, placed it down onto some Hammermill Smooth White Cardstock, and then placed the Essential Glimmer Solid Rectangle Glimmer Hot Foil Plate on top. I taped it down using Best Ever Craft Tape and then placed it plate-side down onto my Glimmer Hot Foil System. Once it had foiled, I ran it through my Platinum 6 Die Cutting Machine and peeled back the foil. I love how you get the reverse of your original image and although the resulting panel looked gorgeous in gold/white, I thought I would add some ink blending over it. I do love my bright colors!
Before adding the ink, I trimmed my panel down using a die from Nestabilities Hemstitch Rectangles Etched Dies and then I placed it onto my Grip Mat. Using blending brushes, I blended all four of the colours from Altenew Red Cosmos Fresh Dye Inks over the foil. The foil resists the ink! Reverse foiling is a great way of using your leftover foil pieces and when you add ink over the top, it’s a really quick way of creating drama on a card! I added some foam tape on to the back of the panel and then adhered it onto a top folding white A2 note card.
My sentiment comes from Curved Everyday Sentiments Glimmer Plate and Die Set. I use these sentiments a lot as I love the movement they add to my cards. I foiled the plate using Satin Champagne Glimmer Hot Foil onto Onyx Black Color Essentials Cardstock and then I cut out the sentiments with the matching die. Using the same die, I cut some additional banners from Champagne Glitter Cardstock. I adhered the black foiled sentiment onto a glitter banner and then added them both across the panel with some foam tape.
To finish the card, I added some Gold Mix Color Essential Gems for a bit of additional sparkle.
I hope that you have enjoyed seeing my three cards today and that they give you some inspiration for using this pretty collection. If you would like to see more of my cards, I would love to have you join me over on my blog, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. In the meantime, thank you so much for joining me here on the blog today. Just some thoughts…
The coloring on these cards are beautiful.
On the first card, I love the background, not so sure about the sentiment style though or the color of it.
Though I might try a green that goes w the leaves to see if it stands out more to me and leave the script
as it is. But its a beautiful card!
The second card seems too busy to me for several reasons… I don’t care for the outline around the flowers. it seems to me
to distract from the flower itself and give it a harsh look. I do like the vellum behind it, but would leave the outline of the flower off. I might try an oval die for that background piece. Since the flower style itself has a rounded edge, the pointed
die cut seems to distract from the focal point of the card which is the flower.
I would also just put the one message on the front “from me to you” and leave the smile one off or put it inside.
Less is more.
The third card has an Asian feel to it for me. I like that one a lot, the only thing i might do differently on that one is
to put it on a cream color card stock base, and put a double boarder around the poppy pc of black and gold. The sentiment is great, it really stands out and goes so well w that style card, but w the boarder of black and gold, I think that would tie
the card tog. a bit more.
All are beautiful card ideas and hope to try them soon!
Thanks for sharing!
