Hauntingly CUTE: Halloween Cards with Spoopy Hues

Hi there my Spellbinders’ friends! My name is Jaycee Gaspar and I’m so excited to share three cards featuring the Happy Haunting Collection. This collection features an assortment of dies and BetterPress Press Plates that will make your Halloween feel magical.

For that hauntingly cute feeling to these next three cards, I used a brighter blend of color palettes. I wanted something that felt fun and playful with a little magical element to them. This is perfect for those of you who love to experience Halloween as more of a cute Autumn holiday and not so scary.

For my first card I did something very simple. You can never go wrong with an ink-blended background. I found this brighter color-blocked palette online. I blended an orange, to yellow, to teal ink color blend on white cardstock. Then instead of using black ink to press the Skully Better Press Plate, I used a deep navy to not make the card so dark. I framed the navy Skully with a rouge offset on both sides to help fill the card panel. I finished the ink-blended background with water splatter for a tone-on-tone splatter without adding an additional color to the palette. Finally, I used a sentiment from Halloween Icons Better Press Plate and Die Set.

Instead of ink blending, I decided to use ink marbling to showcase the Woof-or-Treat Die Set. To ink marble, I used a large slick surface similar to a large acrylic sheet to press ink from an ink pad. Then before saturating the ink on the acrylic sheet, I also moistened the watercolor paper I was using. This way I got more a smooth blend of colors with varying random hard edges. I used yellow-orange ink and fuchsia to get this interesting mix of bright colors. Then I simply arranged the Woof-or-Treat friend to the center of the cardstock and used another sentiment from Halloween Icons.

I loved what I designed for the Spellbinders catalog using Witchin’ Heels Die Set. I was eager to recreate the same design and replicate it in a different color palette. I started with a bright blue cardstock and ink blended progressively darker blue and blue-green inks leaving a dark vignette. The main concept of this card is the addition of the playful moon. I used an assortment of circular dies to make this large moon that the witch is flying through. I thought it was the perfect way to highlight the focal Witchin’ Heels image but also create an interesting Halloween scene. The final touch to the sailing witch is the addition of gold pigment ink to the high points of the image. I felt that this made the witch glow in the moonlight and from the pumpkin lantern on the broomstick handle. Then finally I used another sentiment from Halloween Icons.
