Paper Rose Studio Inspiration

Hi everyone! Stephanie Chestnut here, and I’m excited to share with you some gorgeous card designs using Paper Rose Studio’s Summer 2024 release. You can find all these amazing products at SpellbindersPaperArts.com Today, I’ll walk you through creating five stunning cards using various techniques, including my favorite freezer paper masking method. Let’s dive in!

What inspired me to create these cards were the variety of Paper Rose Studio’s elements available in this release. When I saw the Mosaic Lotus Cutting Die for example, I immediately thought of shabby chic and stained glass designs. Paired with the incredible Inky Colour paper collection, which mimics alcohol ink backgrounds without the mess, I knew I could create something special.

Now, let’s create our cards! The instructions for each card is below, and you can also follow along with my video:

Card 1: Shabby Chic Love

When I saw the Maya’s Garden die-cut set, I immediately thought of creating a shabby chic design. The delicate floral elements lent themselves perfectly to this style. As I was looking through the Inky Colour paper collection, I found a muted, monochromatic blue and brown design that matched beautifully with the die cuts. I wanted to create a card that combined these elements in a soft, vintage-inspired way, showcasing both the intricate die cuts and the gorgeous paper.

Step 1: Choose your background paper from the Inky color collection. I selected a muted, monochromatic blue and brown design.

Step 2: Pick floral elements from Maya’s Garden set. Remove the white outlines for a cleaner look.

Step 3: Distress the die cuts using ink dobbers and distress inks that match your background colors.

Step 4: Further distress the elements by splattering them with a mixture of watered-down white acrylic paint and water.

Step 5: Use Susan’s Garden ultimate tool kit to shape the flowers and leaves, giving them a more realistic appearance.

Step 6: Cut apart the Mega Alpha clear stamps and arrange them to spell “love” on your glass mat, and then use an acrylic block to stamp them

Step 7: Stamp the sentiment using black embossing ink and then heat emboss with gold embossing powder.

Step 8: Apply solar paste through Arty Love Mark Maker Stencil to add texture to your background.

Step 9: Arrange and adhere your die-cut elements and burlap ribbon to the card.

Step 10: Add a pink enamel dot to the center of the main flower for a finishing touch.

Card 2: Stained Glass Lotus

The moment I laid eyes on the Mosaic Lotus die, it reminded me of a stained glass window. The intricate design, combined with the vibrant colors of the Inky Colour paper collection, practically begged to be transformed into a luminous, stained glass-inspired card. I wanted to create something that would capture the light and give the impression of looking through a beautiful, ornate window.

Step 1: Die cut the Mosaic Lotus design several times from black cardstock and various colors of the Inky Color paper.

Step 2: Use the press-and-seal technique to keep all the small pieces in place (I learned this great tip from watching Jennifer Maguire!).

Step 3: Create a gilded edge on your card panel using embossing ink and gold embossing powder.

Step 4: Adhere the black die-cut to your card base, then carefully place the colored pieces within the design.

Step 5: Add a pre-made sentiment and some clear sparkly gems for extra flair.

Cards 3 & 4: Freezer Paper Masking Technique

I’ve always been fascinated by techniques that allow for crisp, clean lines while still maintaining a hand-crafted look. The freezer paper masking technique is one of my favorites because it offers so much versatility. For these two cards, I wanted to showcase how the same technique can yield completely different results depending on the coloring medium used. It’s a great way to get more mileage out of your dies and create unique, eye-catching designs.

Step 1: Die-cut your chosen design from freezer paper, ensuring the plastic side is facing down.

Step 2: Place the die-cut freezer paper on your cardstock, use a parchment paper carrier sheet wrapped around the die-cut and the cardstock, and then run it through a laminator to adhere it. (Be sure to use setting #5)

Step 3: For Card 3, use Copic markers to color the exposed areas. For Card 4, use watercolors.

Step 4: Once dry, remove the freezer paper mask by gently heating it with a heat gun.

Step 5: Add finishing touches like glitter pens, sequins, or additional die-cut elements.

Card 5: Grungy Chic Rainbow

For this final card, I wanted to push the boundaries a bit and combine elements from the previous designs into something new. I love the way distress oxides blend to create a rainbow effect, and I thought it would be fun to contrast that soft, colorful background with more grungy elements. The idea was to create a card that felt both cheerful and edgy, showcasing how versatile these new products can be when combined with different techniques.

Step 1: Create a rainbow background using Distress Oxide inks in Peacock Feathers, Mustard Seed, and Picked Raspberry.

Step 2: Spritz the background with water for a distressed look.

Step 3: Use a damp cloth to create a subtle XO pattern in the background.

Step 4: Apply solar paste through a stencil for added texture.

Step 5: Color die-cut elements with Distress watercolor pencils to match your background.

Step 6: Stamp and heat emboss your sentiment using Clear Sparkle embossing powder.

Step 7: Arrange and adhere all elements to complete your card.

And there you have it! Five unique cards using Paper Rose Studio’s beautiful new release. I love how versatile these elements are! Each card represents a different aspect of cardmaking that I love – from shabby chic to stained glass, from clean lines to grungy textures. I hope this inspires you to experiment with different styles and techniques in your own cardmaking journey.
