Shaking It Up using Shaker Domes & Pretty Mixes!

Hello there Spellbinders friends! It’s Lisa Tilson here with you today on the Spellbinders blog. I’m so excited to be here as a guest and I am sharing three shaker cards using the fabulous Shaker Domes. I love to make shakers, so these cards were really fun to create and the Shaker Domes make it very easy to make them. There are five different-shaped domes in this collection; Arch, Stylish Oval, Emerald Cut, Fresh Picked and Hexi-Gem. They work with the coordinating die sets, so everything is super easy to put together! The dome itself is approx. 0.38” high so you have plenty of room to add different-sized shaker mixes inside.

Let It Snow

I’m kicking off my cards using the Arch Shaker Dome. Arches and ovals are probably my most used shapes for a card and so I went with a Christmas shaker using the arch first. I thought it would be fun to include a poinsettia die cut and a few candy canes within the dome for my first idea. I also picked a sparkling iridescent shaker mix that I thought would look a little bit like tiny snowflakes.

  1. Begin by taking the Christmas Wonder Etched Dies and die cutting the two poinsettia dies. I used two different color cardstocks for a bit of variation – Crimson and Poppy Field and then adhere the two sections together.
  2. Die cut the flower center from Gold Glitter cardstock and glue it into the middle of the poinsettia.
  3. Die cut the berries from Gold Glitter cardstock and white card and glue them together.
  4. Die cut the leaves from Peridot, Rainforest, and a different green from your stash.
  5. Die cut the candy cane twice using Poppy Field and white card and adhere all the pieces together.

  1. Take an A2 (4.25” x 5.5”) panel of white card and glue the poinsettia using Bearly Art Glue. Leave the petals free of any adhesive.
  2. Glue the leaves and candy cane behind the poinsettia and then add wet adhesive to any pieces not already stuck down firmly. This will help make sure that your shaker bits don’t get stuck behind the die cuts.
  3. Take a panel of Poppy Field cardstock and spritz it with clean water. This helps to soften the fibres in the cardstock and prevent cracking when embossing. Place it into the Argyle Plaid 3D Embossing Folder and run it through your Platinum 6 Die Cutting Machine.
  4. Take the coordinating arch die from Essential Arches Etched Dies and cut an arch from the plaid panel.

  1. On the back of the argyle panel, add some strong double-sided tape around the arch edge.
  2. Pop your Arch Shaker Dome in place and press the arch panel edges firmly down. So, your dome is now secured to your front panel.
  3. Add some Bokeh Bliss Teeny Tiny Mix Shapes into the center of your poinsettia panel.
  4. Add some Bearly Art Glue onto the back of the red argyle panel and press it down over the shaker bits/poinsettia spray. This now traps all the sequins inside.
  5. Foil the Let It Snow sentiment from Comfort & Joy Sentiments Hot Foil Plate and Die Set using Champagne Glimmer Hot Foil and the Glimmer Hot Foil System. Cut it out with the coordinating banner die and adhere to the top of your dome with strong double-sided tape. Add the leaves and berries using foam tape and glue to complete the card.

Happy Birthday From Me to You

For my second card, I wanted to decorate the outside edge of the shaker dome and include a sentiment inside. I used the Stylish Oval Shaker Domes for this card.

  1. Start by taking a panel of Fruit Punch Card and the Essential Stylish Oval Etched Dies. Using the die which corresponds with this Oval Shaker Domes, die cut an oval from the center of your panel using the Platinum 6 Die Cutting Machine.
  2. Place another panel of Fruit Punch card under your first and trace a faint line around the edge of the oval window. This will help you to line up your sentiment.
  3. Place this panel into your MISTI stamping tool and line up the Happy Birthday sentiments from Kaleidoscope Arch Sentiments Clear Stamp Set and stamp them using Versamark Ink. Make sure that you apply an anti-static powder bag onto your cardstock before stamping the sentiment. This helps prevent any stray embossing powder.
  4. Apply White Detail Embossing Powder and heat set.

  1. As you did with the first card, add some double-sided tape to the back of the oval window panel (around the edge of the oval), and then take your Stylish Oval Shaker Dome and adhere it to the back of the window panel.
  2. Die cut some flowers and leaves from Stitched Kaleidoscope Arch Etched Dies. I used white card along with Beeswax, Pink Sand, and Fruit Punch cardstock. Adhere the pieces together with Bearly Art Glue.
  3. Arrange the flowers around the shaker dome edge and glue in place. I used a bit of foam tape behind each of the largest flowers so that I could tuck the other pieces behind.

  1. Place some Coral Coast Sparkletz Shaker Mix onto your sentiment panel.
  2. Add Bearly Art Glue to the back of the shaker dome panel and press down over the sentiment/shaker mix to secure the mix inside.
  3. Die cut the sentiment from Stitched Kaleidoscope Etched Dies from white and adhere across the top of the dome using double sided tape.
  4. Finish by adding some gems from the Coral Coast Sparkletz Shaker Mix into the centers of the flowers.

Miss You

For my final card, I once again had my sentiment inside the shaker dome but this time I used the Emerald Cut Shaker Domes. I thought I would add interest around the dome by watercolouring the Floral Celebration Press Plate.

  1. Start off by taking an A2 panel of Porcelain Cardstock and taping it to the BetterPress Letterpress System platen using Best Ever Craft Tape.
  2. Place the Floral Celebration Press Plate down onto the magnetic platform and ink it up with BetterPress Black Ink.
  3. Run it through your die-cutting machine.

  1. Watercolour the panel using Karin Brushmarkers. I used Gold, Grass, Turquoise, Arctic Blue, Cyan, Magenta, and Cerise and I used a fine-tip waterbrush.
  2. Once dry, die cut a window from your panel using the die from Emerald Cut Labels and Tag Etched Dies that corresponds with the shaker dome.
  3. Take a separate A2 panel of white card and use your floral panel to trace a faint line around the window onto the white card. This will help guide your placement of the Miss You Press Plate.

  1. Add some double-sided tape to the back of your floral window panel, around the edge of the window. Place your Emerald Cut Shaker Dome into the window and press around the edges to seal the dome in place. Set to one side.
  2. Foil the Copperplate Miss You Press Plate using Black Glimmer Hot Foil and the Glimmer Hot Foil System.
  3. To finish, place some Gold Smooth Discs over the sentiment and then adhere the shaker dome panel down over the top using Bearly Art Glue.

I had a ball creating these shaker cards and I hope that you have enjoyed seeing them today and that they give you some ideas for using these fun domes and shaker mixes! If you would like to see more of my cards, I would love to have you join me over on my blog, Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. In the meantime, thank you so much for joining me here on the blog today.
