Adding Depth and Dimension to Your Projects

Hello, crafty friends! I’m Adrienne Boese, better known as Alice Scraps Wonderland online. Today I’m sharing two scrapbook layout ideas and one card idea using the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe collection that showcases some different ways to add depth and dimension to your projects.

These two layouts and card make use of more feminine color palettes, but if you want an idea with a more masculine color palette using this same collection, be sure to head over to my blog where I’ve got one more layout for you!

Beautiful Butterfly Layout

For this layout, I added dimension with chipboard and foam stickers, but also by fussy cutting out part of the butterfly wings on the background paper and popping them up with foam adhesive.

  • Using a craft knife and self-healing craft mat, fussy cut out one wing on each butterfly on the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe “Happiness” 12×12 paper.
  • Trim out some Spellbinders cardstock that matches the color of each butterfly and glue the cardstock to the back side of the background paper, covering the “hole” created by the fussy cutting.
  • Using your fingers, shape each fussy cut wing so that it pops up and curves down toward the outer tips. Keep each wing in place with some foam adhesive about where the wing connects to the body.
  • Matte your photo with Alabaster cardstock.
  • Die cut 2 of the Stitch & Dots Scallop Borders Etched Dies from some Teal Topaz cardstock and pink background paper from the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe Collection.
  • Adhere your photo and scallop borders to your background paper with foam adhesive and liquid glue.
  • To the bottom right of the photo, add a large flower from the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe Floral Bits & Pieces ephemera (with foam adhesive), some Decorative Brads, a heart Foam Sticker and a sentiment from the Cardstock Sticker sheet.
    • To the top left of the photo, add a chipboard sticker and brad from the Decorative Brads and a heart from the Cardstock Sticker sheet.
  • Pop on a few of the Dimensional Dots in Two-Tone Teal

Tip: To fussy cut like a pro, opt for a swivel craft knife that will make cutting out rounded shapes much easier. Be sure to take your time when cutting. I alternated right-left for wings that I cut.

Sunshine Layout

This layout makes use of layered papers, floral ephemera and die cuts to add texture and dimension.

  • Matte your photo with Alabaster cardstock.
  • Die cut one of the borders from the Stitch & Dots Scallop Borders Etched Dies from some purple cardstock then glue it under your matted photo, trimming off the excess.
  • Cut two patterned paper mattes of brown and pink from the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe “4×6 Elements” and “Memories” 12×12 papers. Distress the edges of the patterned matte papers with a distressing tool or edge of a blade. Adhere the two patterned papers together with adhesive.
  • Matte your photo piece with the patterned papers, sticking the photo on an angle.
  • Adhere the entire matted piece on an angle to your background paper, Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe “Beautiful” 12×12 paper.
  • Die cut the floral pieces from the Scallop Journal Cards Etched Dies in coordinating colors of Spellbinders cardstock and glue the layers together. Then glue the piece along the bottom right corner of your photo.
  • On the bottom right of the photo, add in the “You Are My” and “Sunshine” Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe Foam Stickers, a butterfly from the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe Floral Bits & Pieces ephemera, and some of the sentiments stickers from the Cardstock Sticker Sheet.
  • On the top left of the photo, layer on some of the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe Floral Bits & Pieces ephemera pieces using liquid glue and foam adhesive in varying thickness to create a layered, dimensional look. Pop on another sentiment sticker.
  • Add some of the Decorative Brads and hearts from the Foam Stickers, plus a few of the Dimensional Dots Two-Tone Purple to fill in spots around your embellishment clusters.

Tip: Don’t be afraid to use a busy patterned background paper for your full background! To keep it looking less chaotic, stick to the color scheme of the background paper for your embellishments for a more harmonious look. To help your picture pop, choose a photo that is simple in composition and colors and use the embellishments to frame your photo and draw the eye in.

Flower Cart Card

Adding dimension to your cards is easy as 1-2-3 with foam adhesive and foam stickers from the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe collection!

  • Die cut the base of the card by folding a piece of white cardstock in half and cutting out the largest of the Emerald Cut Labels and Tag Dies, ensuring that one side of the die goes past the fold of the cardstock—this will create a shaped folded card base!
  • Then die cut the largest size of the die again from a piece of Waterfall cardstock to create the card front. Glue the card front to the card base.
  • Cut out the Flower Cart Etched Dies and some of the flowers from the Scallop Journal Cards Etched Dies from brown, purple, green, teal, cream and silver cardstocks.
  • Ink the debossed cart layers with a bit of brown ink to create more dimension between the layers and draw out the debossing texture.
  • Glue the flower and galvanized bucket layers together.
  • Glue the layers of the cart together with liquid glue, except for the wheels—use foam adhesive to pop the wheels onto the cart for more dimension.
  • Add the flowers to the cart with liquid glue
  • Glue the entire cat to the card front. Pop on one of the Simple Vintage Flower Shoppe Foam Stickers with the “& happiness” sentiment. Use one of the Decorative brads to cover up the ampersand.
  • Pop on a few of the Color Essential Gems in Prism AB.

Tip: You can create additional dimension to your wheels by layering 2 of the wheel center die cuts together to create more thickness. The pearlescent silver from the Silver Assortment Treasured Cardstock is the perfect color for a galvanized bucket!

I hope that you enjoyed these fun ways to easily add texture and dimension to your projects. Don’t forget to head over to my blog to check out an additional idea using a more masculine tonal palette, and until next time, happy crafting!
