Easy and Inky Cards with the Collaged Birds Collection

Hi there, this is Annie Williams and I’m excited to be back on the blog today to share a couple of fun cards made with the new Collaged Birds Collection by Dina Wakley.  The beautiful BetterPress plates and versatile embossing folders in this collection inspired me to create three easy and inky cards for a variety of occasions.

Hello Friend Card

I love a good embossing folder and never hesitate to make it the star of the show.  When I saw the Soaring 3D Embossing Folder, I knew I couldn’t cover up any of the gorgeous detail so I played with some inky techniques and added only minimal embellishments for this pretty card for a friend.

Trim a piece of white cardstock to 4” x 5.25” and spritz the panel with Cracked Pistachio and Mermaid Lagoon Distress Oxide Spray from opposite ends, overlapping in the center a bit for a nice blend.  (If you don’t have sprays, you can just as easily ink-blend with Distress Oxide Inks instead.)  Once dry, emboss the panel with the Soaring 3D Embossing Folder and then lightly rub a white pigment ink pad over the raised surface to bring the design out more.

Mat the background panel with Raven Cardstock and adhere it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with tape runner.  Press the sentiment plates from the Holding Your Heart Sentiments BetterPress Plate Set onto white cardstock using BetterPress Black Ink and cut out with the coordinating die.  Repeat using Thunder BetterPress Ink and the bird plates from the Collaged Birds BetterPress Plate Set.  Pop the sentiments and bird up in the top corner of the card front with foam adhesive.

Gilded Feathers Card

Next, I wanted to see how some of these gorgeous designs look foiled.  After adding a little inky color to create another fun background, I had a cute and unique encouragement card for a friend.

Apply Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using the script plate from the Feather Dream BetterPress Plate Set.  Press Picked Raspberry and Peacock Feathers Distress Ink pads onto a slick surface like a glass mat, spray the ink liberally with water, and press the foiled panel into the ink until the desired blend is achieved.  Once dry, die-cut the panel using one of the Perfect Touch Rectangle Dies.  Apply Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using the feather plates from the Feather Dream BetterPress Plate Set and the sentiment plates from the Holding Your Heart Sentiments BetterPress Plate Set and die cut out using the coordinating dies.

Trim a piece of Raven Cardstock to 4.125” x 5.375” and emboss it with the Soaring 3D Embossing Folder.  Wrap a few twists of gold metallic thread around the panel and adhere it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base.  Pop the inky panel up in the center of the card with foam adhesive and add the feathers and sentiment on top with more foam adhesive.

Epic Birthday Card

Lastly, I thought the swallows from the Collaged Birds BetterPress Plate Set were so pretty, I decided to create another inky background for them to fly freely around.  Here a couple of colorful spots ground these beautiful creatures for a simple and fun birthday card.

Spritz scrap pieces of white cardstock using Cracked Pistachio and Mermaid Lagoon, Picked Raspberry and Peacock Feathers, and Squeezed Lemonade and Picked Raspberry Distress Oxide Sprays from opposite ends, overlapping in the center a bit to create some beautiful blends.  Die cut a couple of different sizes of circles from these blended panels using the Everlasting Circles Die Set.  Adhere the circles to a piece of white cardstock as shown and then emboss the panel using the Scribbled Letter Embossing Folder.

Trim the embossed panel to 4” x 5.25” and adhere it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base using foam adhesive.  Press the bird plates from the Collaged Birds BetterPress Plate Set and sentiment plates from the Holding Your Heart Sentiments BetterPress Plate Set onto white cardstock using BetterPress Black Ink and die cut out using the coordinating dies.  Add the birds to the front of the card with foam adhesive, slightly askew from their respective inky spots, and pop the sentiment up on the bottom corner of the card with more foam adhesive.
