Delicate Duo: Capturing the Charm of Daisies
Hi there, my Spellbinders’ friends! My name is Jaycee Gaspar, and I’m so excited to share two cards featuring Yana’s Daisies by Yana Smakula. This collection features gorgeous daisy images in Yana’s signature die-cut outline style. I decided to pair the A2 and A7 BetterPress plates with complementary color layering stencils. For my designs, I chose to emphasize the versatility of these plates by using cohesive color palettes—just like the vast daisy family, Asteraceae.
Up first, I used Yana’s Daisy Trio BetterPress Plate and its coordinating Layered Daisy Trio Stencil to make this card based on Rudbeckia. In my home state of Colorado, these black-eyed-susans thrive in the dry and high altitude climate. I started with the A2 BetterPress Plate and a piece of white cardstock. I applied a gradient of green inks to the background press plates. My secret is to let the inks overlap when applying the water-based dye ink pad directly to the plate. I followed the coloring stencils in numerical order. I first applied a layer of yellow ink at the tips of the petal rays. Then, I blended a layer of a warm brown to the center of the flower. I used a deep green on the stems and leaves to support the bright blooms. I love that this layering stencil contains an offset shadow layer that makes the daisies pop off the card. I finished this card with white platters and enamel pearls. In a signature fashion, I included one of Yana’s Crafty Hugs Sentiments in the gorgeous scripted style.
For my second card I focused on the larger Daisy Shower BetterPress Plate and its coordinating Layered Daisy Shower Stencil coloring stencil set. The full background of this BetterPress plate is A7, however I cropped mine down to my favorite A2 portrait size. Just like the previous card, I started with a gradient of inks. This time I used a gradient of teal inks to complement the color triad I have on this card. I applied a gradient of yellow-orange and magenta ink blends for the petals. I based this color palette of an annual Osteospermum I had in my garden in 2024. I colored the stems in a blue-green hue to let the flowers take center stage on my card. Then just as the previous card, I surrounded the Crafty Hugs Sentiment with white splatter and enamel pearls.
Huge thanks to the Spellbinders team for letting me share these two Yana’s Daisies by Yana Smakula projects with you all! You can find more of my card projects over at YouTube, Instagram (@jaycee.gaspar), and at my blog. I hope to see you all again very soon!
