Kites & Dreams: A Look at the Sky’s the Limit Collection with Simon Hurley

Hi, friends! I’m Lauren Taylor Made and I’m thrilled to be guest blogging today to share my excitement for the brand new Sky’s the Limit collection from Spellbinders and Simon Hurley! This collection is bursting with adorable kites and cheerful sentiments that are perfect for creating uplifting handmade cards. I’ve had so much fun playing with the etched dies, the stunning 3D embossing folder and coordinating layering stencils, and the beautiful BetterPress sentiments. Get ready to send your creativity soaring!

For my first card, I wanted to capture the feeling of kites flying high in a breezy sky. I started by embossing a piece of Waterfall cardstock with the Flying Kites 3D Embossing Folder, creating a gorgeous textured background. Then, I used the Layered Flying Kites Stencil with Distress Inks in Salvaged Patina, Broken China, and Tumbled Glass to add tone-on-tone color to the embossed kites. I splattered the panel with Splatter White Opaque Watercolor and set it aside to dry. Next, I trimmed a piece of white cardstock to 4 x 5-1/4 inches and used the Perfect Touch Arches Etched Dies to cut out a window.

I adhered the stenciled and embossed Waterfall cardstock to an A2 card base and popped up the frame with foam adhesive. I cut a kite from the Fly a Kite Etched Dies using Teal Topaz, Cosmic Sky, and Silver cardstock, and assembled it onto the card. I foiled the Soaring Sentiments Press Plate with Rainbow Glimmer Hot Foil and used the coordinating die to cut out the “lifting you up with love” sentiment, which I then popped up onto the card. Finally, I added a few Opal Color Essentials Gems for a touch of sparkle.

For my second card, I focused on a sweet scene of a child with their kite. I started by die-cutting one of the Perfect Touch Arches dies from Dune cardstock and stenciled the Layered Flying Kites Stencil onto the arch die cut using Abandoned Coral, Spiced Marmalade, Squeezed Lemonade, Twisted Citron, Tumbled Glass, and Wilted Violet Distress Inks. I attached the arch to the center of an A2 card base. I used the “let your dreams take flight” sentiment, which I had previously foiled and popped up onto the card. I die-cut the Up and Away Etched Dies from a rainbow of colored cardstocks. I used alcohol markers to color in the eyes, mouth, and cheeks. I assembled the little girl (who may resemble my own daughter) holding the kite and popped her up onto the card. To finish, I added Opal Color Essentials Gems around the card for extra sparkle.
