Colorful Rare Bloom Watercolor Cards by Deborah Hellman

Hello crafty friends! My name is Deborah Hellman, and I am thrilled to be a guest designer for Spellbinders this month. Today, I am sharing with you some colorful, Spring watercolor cards that I created using the newest House-Mouse Collection: Rare Bloom. I love House-Mouse and watercoloring, so for me it is a perfect pairing. Another option, these beautiful stamped images could easily be colored with colored pencils or markers to suit your personal preferences. In addition to being adorable, all of the House-Mouse stamps have great details and shading which is a big plus. I stamped all of the images on a 4¼ x 5½ inch piece of Spellbinders’ Watercolor Cardstock using BetterPress Black Ink. Each set includes multiple sentiment options so you can customize your project to meet your needs.

On my first card, I selected the Sweet Nectar Stamp Set. I love hummingbirds and have several feeders. Before I began, I looked up some of the color variations to use as my inspiration. Once I selected my model image, I then selected a patterned paper with similar colors from the Just Sayin’ 6×6 Printed Paper Pack by Kelly Bangs. I felt like the pinks and greens in the patterned paper helped to highlight my sweet pink and green hummingbird. Tip: Add a slightly darker shade or tone along the edges of your images that are away from the light to help create the illusion of a three-dimensional object by adding a small amount of either a complementary color, black, or brown. To create highlights, either add more water or white to create a lighter tint.

After watercoloring the images, I cut an opening into my patterned paper using the Perfect Touch Arched Etched Dies. I also added some dimension by adding some White Foam Adhesive Squares between the layers.

For the next card, I used the Music to My Ears Stamp Set. I selected the birthday sentiment because I am always in need of birthday cards and can never have too many in my card stash. The xylophone reminded me of a rainbow colored one that I had as a child, so of course I had to use rainbow colors.

After I finished painting the panel, I selected two colors of Spellbinders Cardstock, Teal Topaz and Watermelon Pink (retired) for my background layers. Since my xylophone has a rainbow of colors, you could use lots of possible combinations. I used one of the colors as my base and die cut both my watercolor panel and the additional layer using two consecutive sizes of the Notched Corner Frame Dies. I again used some White Foam Adhesive Squares to separate my layers and add dimension.

On my final card, I used the Rare Bloom Stamp Set. I wanted to repeat some of the colors from the previous two cards in the set, so I selected Teal Topaz and Lilac for my cardstock layers and to use when painting my images.

Once I finished watercoloring and my panel was dry, I die cut the watercolor layer using the Heartfelt Thanks & Scallops Etched Die Set. I then cut the Teal Topaz Cardstock layer slightly larger than my watercolor layer using the Precision Layering A2 A Etched Die Set. I again added White Foam Adhesive Squares to separate the layers and add dimension.
