Home Sweet Quilt Collection – Color Play with Jean Manis

Hello! It’s Jean Manis sharing friendship cards created with the versatile and timeless Home Sweet Quilt Collection by Becca Feeken. The patterns in the collection gave me an opportunity to play with color. I chose two cool colors–blue and purple–as well as their tints and shades; cool colors tend to be calming and relaxing. Tint and shade are ways to change a hue: A tint is the addition of white to lighten a color; a shade is the addition of black to darken a color. Let’s look at how I played with color and pattern.

Hexagon Panels

On the first card, I used blue, purple, and tints of both with the Hexagon Panel dies. Pairing the hexagon pieces with the Orange Peel Quilt 3D embossing folder background further emphasizes the cozy feel!

  • Dry-emboss A2-size panel of Glacier cardstock with the Orange Peel Quilt 3D embossing folder. Attach to A2-size card base.
  • Stamp Quilty Hugs sentiment in black on Snowdrift Cut with banner die ½ inch tall by 2 ¼ inches wide. (I used a die that was included with a Glimmer Hot Foil Plate sentiment set.)
  • Cut frame for hexagon panel from Snowdrift cardstock with the Hexagon Panel dies (solid/outline shape and corresponding stitched insert). Back with a Snowdrift panel cut with only the outline shape die. I cut an additional frame using the Hexagon Panel dies (solid/outline shape and corresponding stitched insert) and adhered it to the top for additional depth. This step is not required.
  • Cut Purple Mist, Lilac Blossom, Raindrop, and medium blue cardstock with the Hexagon Panel stitched insert die. Inlay hexagons into frame.
  • Add quilted assembly to dry-embossed background and attach sentiment.

Flower Mini Quils

On the next card, I used the same colors as above–blue, purple, and tints of both–with the Flower Mini Quilts dies. The sentiment in the Quilty Hugs set pairs perfectly with the quilt blocks.

  • Cut frame from Snowdrift cardstock with Flower Mini Quilts dies (solid/outline shape and corresponding stitched insert). Reserve Snowdrift pieces as shown in design. Back frame with Snowdrift panels cut with only the outline shape die. The frame measures 3 inches square. Repeat process for second quilt.
  • Cut Purple Mist, Lilac Blossom, Raindrop, and medium blue cardstock with the Flower Mini Quilts stitched insert die. Inlay and adhere pieces into the frames switching the light purple for the light blue and the purple for the blue on the second design.
  • Stamp Quilty Hugs sentiment in black on Glacier cardstock panel measuring 6 ½ inches wide by 3 ½ inches tall. Add panel to card base.
  • Add assembled quilt blocks.

Log Cabin Mini Quilts

On the final card from the Home Sweet Quilt Collection, I used the blue, purple, tints of both, and shades of both with the Log Cabin Mini Quilts dies. Using a variety of colors showcases the Log Cabin pattern.

  • Cut frame from Snowdrift cardstock with Log Cabin Mini Quilts dies (solid/outline shape and corresponding stitched insert). Reserve smallest stitched square. Back frame with a Snowdrift panel cut with only the outline shape die. The frame measures 3 inches square. Repeat process for second quilt.
  • Cut Purple Mist, Lilac Blossom, Royal Amethyst, Raindrop, medium blue, and Cosmic Sky cardstock with the Log Cabin Mini Quilts stitched insert die. Inlay cardstock pieces into frames. On the top square, the lightest colors (the tints of blue and purple) are on the outside and the darkest colors (the shades of blue and purple) are on the inside. On the bottom square, the shades are on the outside and the tints are on the inside.
  • Stamp Quilty Hugs sentiment in black on a Snowdrift cardstock panel measuring 3 ½ inches wide by 7 inches tall. Add panel to card base.
